The Ark
History
The Ark was a space station, the orbital home for the humans whose ancestors escaped the Nuclear Apocalypse on Earth 97 years before the present time of the role play.
When the Nuclear Apocalypse occurred on May 10, 2052, there were 13 space stations orbiting Earth. The space station inhabitants assumed Earth was uninhabitable and that they were the only survivors. To pool resources and populations, the federation stations decided to merge into a single space habitat, the Ark. (12 nations joined their space stations together) At one point in the Ark's early history, the "blight" happened. People on the Ark had to choose between cannibalism or starving to death. Those who chose to eat had to watch those who chose not to eat slowly die. According to Abby Griffin, "their guilt nearly destroyed them." Those who went through the blight, became known as the Blight Generation. Afterwards, the Ark started floating their dead. The Ark was intended to sustain survivors for 200 years. After which, it was believed Earth would be survivable and the inhabitants could return to the ground. However, less than a century after unification, life support on the Ark was failing. By 2148, even the best repair estimates had the work taking longer than the system could keep the population alive. That is why they sent the 100 delinquents down. |

The Council
The Council is the governing institution that makes executive decisions for the Ark. It is headed by the Chancellor. Below the Council are the general Officers who make up the Ark's bureaucracy and the Guard who maintain security and law enforcement.
The council are the ones who secretly created project Exodus, a plan in which to send down 100 juvenile delinquents down to Earth to test if it was yet habitable.
Traditionally, each Council member is appointed by the Chancellor and approved by the 6 other Council members, one of them being the vice chancellor. Those who are on the Council are acknowledged as leaders and often possess classified information. Information from the Council is passed to the rest of the Sky People via "Station Representatives."
The Council also decided the fate of people accused of wrongdoing on The Ark.

The Guard
The Guard was the security team on the Ark and were in charge of reinforcing the laws that were expected to be followed by all Arkers. This included surprise inspections of the Sky People's living quarters and standing guard during council meetings. They worked toward law enforcement and providing protection for those in the Ark. They were also responsible for carrying out punishments for criminals and floating them when found guilty. Guard cadets are responsible for chaperoning public gatherings, i.e. dances. The Guard wear a special uniform and are equipped with weapons to use when necessary.
The ranks are as follows (starting from highest to lowest):
- Commander
- Major
- Lieutenant
- Sergeant
- Inspector
- Guardsman
- Cadet
Below are the requirements and training for someone to join the Guard:
- Citizen must be at least 18 years old before enrolling in the Guard's academy.
- Once enrolled, the first 3 years consist of classes (theory based ones such as Earth Skills, history of weapons, etc). Students must maintain a certain average during all courses as the workload is intense and helps weed out those who are not fully disciplined enough to be in the Guard. During this time, students must also gather all the necessary paperwork (i.e. letter of recommendation, etc).
- After 3 years of schooling, they obtain their degree.
- Once they graduate from these classes, they are given the rank of Cadet. They undergo rigorous physical training for 1 year. They must pass all fitness and physical tests in order to be promoted from this rank. It is possible for candidates to fail their year, which will only prolong their Cadet status.
- After 3 years of schooling, and 1 year of Cadets, if all marks and results are satisfactory, citizens are then officially given the title of Guardsman.
Rules
Due to the resource scarcity on the Ark, adult criminals were punished with death and juvenile offenders were imprisoned until they turned 18 when they were either freed or executed by choice of the council.
The Ark's laws were strict and harsh. In the extreme conditions of space, with limited resources and the continued survival of humanity at stake, these laws were deemed necessary.
Many of the laws were implemented due to the dwindling resources. Rigid population laws restricted couples to having only one child. Food, medicine, and supplies were strictly rationed. Medical staff were not allowed to continue treatment for patients whose prognosis were deemed too grim to be worth the resources.
The punishment for committing all crimes, regardless of their nature or severity, was the same. The adults were floated immediately upon conviction, or in other words, sent out into space. Minors were confined until they turned eighteen and then given one final chance to make their case.

Illegal Pregnancies and Children On the Ark
Any child born without permit or violating the one child - law, fall under the category of Illegal Children. There will be no resources wasted on them, meaning basic food and only basic medical treatment will be administered. The children will be kept in the Skybox until they turn 18, then, like with any underage criminal, their case will be reviewed. Usually the children get floated when turning 18. Parents of Illegal Children will be floated upon discovery of the child (both mother and father).
If the mother comes clean about her pregnancy in the early stages (up to week 7 - 10, depending on the case), the pregnancy will be terminated. In this case the mother or father do not have to fear punishment. All pregnancies reported by the mother or father at a later stage will be terminated, but the parents will lose any chance at getting a permit for a child in the future.
Underage pregnancies follow similar rules. Reported in early stages, the pregnancy will be terminated without punishment for the mother. At a later stage the mother will also lose her right to get a permit. The father, if he is underage will always lose his right to get a permit. If the father is not underage at the time of conception he will get floated. If the mother is considered an adult at the time of conception but the father is considered underage, the mother will also be floated.
Second pregnancies are forbidden under any circumstances! If a mother or father report a pregnancy in the early stages the pregnancy will be terminated, both parents rations will be lowered for how long the pregnancy would have lasted - the first child's rations will be untouched. Any pregnancy reported after the early stage results in both parents getting floated.

Components of the Ark
Though there are an accumulation of 12 different nations that came together, the Ark itself splits its people into three parts of the ship which pretty much determines your rank and status and potential occupation:
- Walden is one of the two outer ships of the Colony. Residents of this ship are called Waldenites. Along with Arcadia, their inhabitants are the poorest and suffer from malnutrition. Walden is known to have the bare minimum of luxury, and this part of the ship does not have reserves like spare oxygen, lights or water.
- Arcadia is one of the two outer ships of the Colony. Residents of this ship are called Arcadians. Along with Walden, their inhabitants are the poorest and suffer from malnutrition. It is the home of many of the delinquents on Earth in the novel.
- Phoenix is the richest ship on the Colony. People from this ship are called Phoenicians. It houses the Council chambers, Eden Hall, and many of the Colony's primary facilities.
Where your character lives on the ark CAN determine what your character's occupation or role is on the ark. A majority of the time, people tend to stick with what they knew and what they were good at to get credits. Rarely, a person is chosen for their skills or intellect to become an apprentice in a different field they've been born apart from, such as an individual from the go-sci station becoming an apprentice to become a medic.
The Ark contains several different stations, but we'll just highlight a couple of main ones:

Technology
From what is read in the novel and seen in the book, the Ark contains a high amount of futuristic technology to keep the Ark running. Computers transfer and work all the data and function the Ark as a whole. Each person contains a comm which allows people to call one another, text, and transfer credits. The only person who can view your own comm through your own eyes is the holder of the comm which is connected to them through their ear. This can be removed.

Roles and Occupations
The currency of the Colony is the "ration credit" or the "ration point", more commonly known as the "credit". In order to earn these credits, you had to be paid from your occupation. The lower your occupation, the less amount of credits you earn to purchase nutrition packs, food, necessities, and special antiques and souvenirs on Exchange Day (A time when all three sections get together and trade and sell old earth items) though there is a limit to how much food someone can buy.
